New Scenes III - International composition competition organised by the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin

 

Call for entries

New scenes for music theatre: for the third time, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, invites entries to the international composition competition “New Scenes”. 

Up to three winners of the competition will receive a stipend to each co mpose a music theatre work of 20 to 30 minutes. The libretti for these pieces will be developed in collaboration with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler [by graduates of the degree course “Theatrical Writing” at the Universität der Künste Berlin]. 

The “new scenes” will be premiered on 28th April 2017 in the Tischlere i at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, staged by three teams of directors from the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. 

The competition is open to composers of up to 35 years of age. The entrant will be judged on the basis of the submission of a section from one of their own music theatre pieces that they deem to represent their work most clearly. 


Conditions

Submission - the entrants are asked to submit the following documents:

  • Sample of work from a piece of music theatre (score and optionally a CD, two copies of both)
  • CV and address (including e-mail address)

Deadline: 30th September 2015


Process

  • Announcement of winners: 16th November 2015
    Prizes: Up to three prizes may be awarded. The prize includes a stipend (5,000 Euro each) to compose a 20 to 30 minute piece of music theatre.
     
  • Submission of the piano score: 1st September 2016
  • Submission of full score and voice material: 1st November 2016
  • World premiere and further performances in April 2017 in the Tischlerei at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

 

The Tischlerei

The Tischlerei at the Deutsche Oper Berlin was opened in the 2012/2013 season in the theatre’s former carpentry workshop when Dietmar Schwarz took over as artistic director. The venue can seat up to 400 people in variable arrangements and is a space for a diverse programme of productions. This includes experimental and contemporary forms of music theatre, along with the series of Tischlerei concerts and the varied shows staged by the Young Deutsche Oper, with music theatre for children and yo ung people, toddler and baby concerts, as well as a variety of different partnerships with schools, third level colleges and partners in the independent scene. 

Projects have been and are being developed and staged in the Tischlerei with artists as different as the composers Gordon Kampe, Matthew Herbert, Ole Hübner, Hans Peter Kuhn, Konrad Boehmer and der Band The bianca Story, directors like Jakop Ahlbom, Annechien Koerselman and Daniel Pfluger, and artists groups like Nico and the Navigators and norton.commander.productions. On top of this are projects with young artists at the beginning of their careers, such as the biannual project NEW SCENES, now in its third year.
